10 tips to turn your New Year’s Resolutions into Daily Solutions


How do you turn your New Year’s Resolutions into Daily Solutions?


What are your top 3 New Year’s resolutions?

I was curious to see what the statistics showed. Clearly, there are different lists, but the first one that I googled and clicked on was: “Top 10 New Year's Resolutions”, By Albrecht Powell, About.com Guide. His article, conveniently, stated my favorites as the first three.

1. Spend more time with family and friends
2. Exercise
3. Diet

Are any of these your New Year’s resolutions? It is quite a phenomena why some people succeed at some or all of these;  losing 10 pounds, incorporate exercise into their routine, even if they don’t need to lose weight and are able to spend quality time with their family and friends, while others have more difficulties integrating these activities into their lives.

After interacting with multitudes of people about their relationships, exercise and diet resolutions and understanding what works for me. Being happily married for 17 years, while being the proud Mom of 7 kids, oh and yes, having taken off between 20- 30 pounds after each of my 7 kids were born, I can tell you what my experiences have taught me. True, it would be impossible to tell you everything in one blog post today, but I can give you a few tips to incorporate these top 3 aspirations into your life.

Interestingly, I think the difference between the people who succeed at achieving success on a daily basis and the people who fail miserably and get negative in a downward spiral are the people who associate their resolutions to “New Year’s” or “I will start Monday” or “tomorrow”. After all, they say that the most popular day to get everything done is “tomorrow”!

These “all or nothing” personalities are willing to give it their “all” and they really do a great job, until they get tired of trying so hard or a challenge comes their way and their whole positive, well meaning life improvement change or health kick gets foiled and they revert back to their old, bad habits. Even worse, they create a negative association with their extreme behaviors, as being too time consuming, not worth it and just plain “too difficult”. Generally, they gain back all 10 lbs and even an extra 5 lbs, they stop exercising altogether, they stop trying to be a good parent, spouse, etc.. they stop their job hunt, they stop going to the class, and the list goes on...

Why? What doesn’t work? Extreme behaviors. Not allowing yourself to be human. Not allowing yourself to eat a little dessert every once in a while. Though, understanding that eating dessert everyday will keep you further away from your goals. Realize that it is ok and then one must go right back to eating healthfully.

My approach is MarriageArchitect’s MyDailySolutions. I will give you 3 tips in each category of what to do TODAY to improve your quality of life.

TODAY and every day. Turn your once a year, New Year’s Resolutions into MarriageArchitect’s MyDailySolutions.

I. Spend more time with family and friends:
1. Spending more time with family doesn’t mean much if you don’t have quality relationships with your family. Start with creating positive relationships. This will naturally lead you to spend more time with your family because they will feel a need to spend time with the people who appreciate them. If it’s not you, then it will be someone else. Everyone needs to be appreciated and valued.

Say 3 positive things to each member of your family today and everyday: spouse and children, etc...
In case you need some ideas:
How was your day?
I love you.
I am proud of you.
Thank you for doing your homework as soon as you got home. It means alot to me.
You are incredible for taking care of the plumbing problem.
Thank you for making dinner. It was delicious.
You are such a good parent.
You have so much patience.
Thank you!!

2. Invite your good friends for a meal or go out for coffee. Your friends will appreciate being thought of and they will enjoy the getaway. Have fun!

3. Working too hard at work and no time for family or friends? Prioritize what only you can do and delegate the rest to a Virtual Assistant. You will benefit by maximizing your time, you will grow your business and you will have more quality time to spend with your family and friends.

II. Exercise:
1. First thing in the morning, put on your exercise clothes. You will be more likely to exercise.
2. Try to enjoy the activity that you do, but fortunately, you can get the same results either way.
3. My advice: Just do it. Keep at it. You will love the results.

III. Diet:
1. Buy the healthy foods that work for you. Keep them in stock. Eat them before you are starving and grab something that will not help you get to your goal weight.
What works for me: eggs, yogurt, red peppers, carrots, bran flakes, oatmeal, chicken, frozen veggies and more!
What foods work for you? Write them down. GO BUY THEM TODAY!!
2. Eating out of resentment because “It’s not fair that I gain weight easily” is not going to help you get thinner. Do you really want to lose weight? Do you want to lose 10 pounds in 10 weeks?

3. As I said before, eat 3 bites of dessert when you really want it. Then go right back to eating healthfully.

I already stocked up on my healthy basic foods.
I am always searching for positive comments to say to my husband, children and friends.
I did my 6 mi run in 61 minutes!

All or Nothing?

Are you an “all or nothing” kind of person?

As always, I had such a busy day yesterday. Trying to fit all of my appointments for work and the kids’ schedule into the few hours until the kids get home. It is easy for me to say that I don’t have enough time to exercise.

To run the 10k or not? I didn’t have an hour to spare!

What would you do? Where do you fit exercise into your schedule?

Soon after having my first child I realized that the weight was not just going to slide off, I knew that I had to prioritize myself before everyone and everything else each day. One aspect of this is regarding exercise and realizing that there are certain things that only I can do for myself (and others) that no one else can do. Regarding weight loss and leading a healthy lifestyle, this means fitting exercise into most days of the week.

So what do you do when you just don’t have time?

The life shattering answer: You make time.

How can you make time? At different points in my life that means waking up at 6am and going for a walk, run or exercising at the gym. The following example stands out in my mind!

One year, while I was still living in Cedarhurst, NY, my good friend wanted to come to the gym in the morning with me. This was our crazy morning “wake- up call”: I would call my good friend at 5:30am, let the phone ring at her house. Now you know why she is a “good friend”. If you would call most people at 5:30am, they would no longer be your “good friend”! As soon as she said “hello”, I then hung up the phone, got dressed and drove to her house, picked her up and we went to exercise at Club Central before starting our busy schedules.

Perhaps it was crazy. However, resolutions like these get you to your goal. Resolutions like these form healthy habits. Needless to say, I lost weight.

So what do you do when you don’t want to get up at 5:30am (like me at this point in my life!) ?

I would have preferred to run my 10k. It’s just where I am at these days. I like to exercise for the full hour. It is the ALL.
It is easy to say; “if I don’t have time for the full hour, then I can’t exercise at all.”

What will it be for today? All or nothing?

Sometimes I need to remind myself that it shouldn’t be “all or nothing”. I really force myself.

As for yesterday, I carved out a 30 minute slot in my day to exercise and decided that it would be better to run for 30 minutes than to forgo my routine altogether.

It felt great and I still got to all of my appointments on time.

What would you have done in my case, yesterday?

Not run at all?
